Traditional Metal Braces
The most common type of braces worn today is traditional metal braces. Made of a high-grade stainless steel, these braces use brackets and wires to straighten your teeth- and are more comfortable than ever before. With metal braces, you can add colored elastic rubber bands for a more unique, colorful and "you" smile.
Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional ones but do not require the elastic bands- meaning less friction on the teeth and fewer appointments for you. These braces come with either metal, ceramic or clear braces. They are the same size as the metal braces but use clips instead of elastics to guide the teeth into place. This specialized clip reduces the amount of pressure on the teeth, thus requiring fewer adjustments overall.
Clear (Ceramic) Braces
Ceramic braces are composed of clear materials, and, therefore, are less visible on the teeth. For this very reason, ceramic braces are used for older teens or adults who have cosmetic concerns. While ceramic braces are visually less prominent, they do require more attention for oral hygiene. This is because they are a bit larger and are moral brittle compared to their metal counterparts. For this very reason, ceramic braces usually are used more frequently on the upper front teeth than on the lower ones.
Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are a series of comfortable, removable acrylic custom fit trays that straighten your teeth like braces. Not only are these aligners invisible, but they are also removable, so you can remove them when you eat or drink- plus oral hygiene is less of a hassle. These aligners contain no metal to cause any abrasions to the mouth during your treatment and usually result in a quicker treatment overall too.
Lingual braces are braces that are hidden behind the teeth- and, therefore, are "invisible" when you smile. Lingual braces are customized and created to match the unique shape of your teeth. For this reason, they are often a great option for athletes, models, musicians and adult professionals.
